Teachers are responsible for fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that allows all students to flourish and meet their potential. As a teacher in this district, we offer a variety of teaching opportunities.

Most teachers begin in Burnaby as a teacher-on-call. When a contract position becomes available, it is posted as an internal job bulletin and applications are accepted from those currently on staff. 

To teach in Burnaby applicants must provide the following information: 

  • Cover letter and Resume
  • Three (3) successful references
  • Teaching Regulation Branch (TRB) certificate
  • Transcripts and final practicum report
  • Statement of your philosophy
  • Necessary qualifications noted in the qualifications document

  • Access to one day of release for mentors and mentees to engage collaborative learning such as co-planning, co-teaching, and observing each other’s practice
  • Ongoing support sessions scheduled at the convenience of mentors and mentees
  • Career advancement opportunities such as program consultants, staff development teachers, resource teachers, head teacher (elementary) and department head (secondary)

Moving to B.C. 

If you are moving to B.C. from another province or from outside of Canada, please apply for a BC teaching certificate six months to one year before you arrive to ensure you possess or are eligible for a BC teaching certificate prior to application.

The Burnaby School District values the professional experience you've gained outside of B.C. However, to work in any school district in B.C., you will first need to obtain your B.C. Teaching Certification and Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).

Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) 

If you are planning to work in the B.C. public school system, you also need to apply to the Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) for a category that helps determine your salary level.
