The BC Provincial School for the Deaf (BCSD) is a Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) school that works in partnership with South Slope Elementary and Burnaby South Secondary schools. Working as a team, members of the BC Provincial School for the Deaf strive to develop the full learning potential and positive self-identity of each student. Value is given to Deaf heritage and each student is encouraged to become a responsible, contributing member of the Deaf and hearing communities.

The BC Provincial School for the Deaf consists of the Elementary Program (K - 7) at South Slope Elementary (opened Sept 1992) and the Secondary Program (8 to 12) at Burnaby South Secondary (opened Feb 1993).

The Burnaby School District is an inclusive environment where students can fully participate in classroom activities and social interactions. ASL in schools enriches the educational environment for all students.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for individuals proficient in ASL and qualified in the following positions:  

  • Education Assistant (CUPE)
  • Deaf/Blind Intervenor (CUPE)
  • Sign Language Interpreter (CUPE)
  • Classroom Teacher (BTA)
  • Other district positions 

What the District offers- CUPE positions: 

  • Competitive wage, plus 4% holiday pay
  • Casual and Casual Temporary staff are eligible for employment standards sick days (ESA)
  • Casual Temporary staff are eligible for holiday pay (4%), sick days (earned as you work) dental and extended health benefits
  • 10-month Regular positions are eligible for holiday pay, 17 sick days for full year entitlement, dental and extended health benefits, gratuity pay/leave, life insurance, long-term disability, and pension

  • New teachers have the opportunity to participate in a mentorship program. In this program, new teachers are paired with teacher mentors. During the school year, the program provides the following:
    • Six professional learning sessions throughout the year
    • A support network for mentees and mentors to connect and collaborate
    • Access to one day of release for mentors and mentees to engage in collaborative learning such as co-planning, co-teaching, and observing each other’s practice
    • Ongoing support sessions scheduled at the convenience of mentors and mentees
  • Career advancement opportunities such as program consultants, staff development teachers, resource teachers, head teacher (elementary) and department head (secondary).
