The Burnaby School District is the fourth largest in BC. The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, including a range of district and provincial resource programs. The District supports and provides learning to 25,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) students and to more than 6,000 adult learners with approximately, 3% of the population identify as Indigenous. With more than 100 languages spoken in the homes of its students, the District is one of the most culturally diverse in Canada.

What the District offers: 

The District has a variety of programs, resources, and collective agreement provisions for Indigenous staff.

  • Employment Equity Hiring for Teachers of Indigenous Ancestry:  
    • Preference is given to candidates of Indigenous ancestry over other candidates, provided they meet the qualifications for the position. 
    • Upon attaining continuing contract status, self-identified Indigenous educators are exempt from lay off.
  • Indigenous health and well-being resources: mental health staff portal that provides culturally sensitive resources.  
  • Annual Indigenous staff gathering to build community and connection amongst Indigenous staff in the District. 
  • Five (5) days of paid cultural leave days.

Burnaby School District’s Indigenous Education Program provides culturally relevant programming and services to students of Indigenous ancestry. Our enhanced services are intended to create pathways to success for each and every student of Indigenous ancestry within Burnaby schools. Indigenous Education staff work collaboratively with school and District staff to provide Indigenous students with unique opportunities that integrate Indigenous culture with academic achievement.  Positions within the Indigenous Education Department are unique opportunities for staff to integrate their cultural knowledge and teachings through targeted services and programs for Indigenous students.
